The Rise of the Micro-Trend

When Should your Brand Participate?

Marketers are exhausted.

It seems like every 15 minutes there is a new trend to hop on, leaving teams scrambling to get content published before a trend window closes. The latest is the Demure trend.

The ‘trend window’ as marketers call it, is continuing to shrink. Where past trends like ‘tebowing’ or the ‘ice-bucket challenge’ would go on for months, today's trends have 3-5 days before the internet has moved on.

It can be hard to keep up.

And trends can dilute your brand if you rely on them to carry your content strategy. You will always chase and never lead with your creativity if you rely too heavily on trends. This behavior is not very mindful nor demure. It’s reactive and brazen.

Think about it like candy. Sweets are nice to have here and there, but they can’t be your whole diet. That’s what trends are: candy content. You need sustenance, you need original content to be the bulk of your marketing.

Okay, so I don’t come off as the old man yelling at clouds, I put together a cheat sheet of when you should hop on trends.

That’s it for this week!
