Why Great Ads Don't Feel Like Ads

Great content markets itself

Earlier this week, I was scrolling through social media when a post popped up in my feed. It was a callback to the viral video, Zombie Kid Likes Turtles (2007).

The post immediately caught my eye, and I didn’t realize it was sponsored. It was a post by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie account, reenacting the original viral video with a full-grown Jonathan in the same face paint he wore in 07’.

So far, the results of this ad:

  • 12 million impressions

  • ~35,000 engagements

And this is just one placement, as the video has amassed 370,000 plays on YouTube as well.

The best ads don’t feel like ads, plain and simple. They are creative, captivating, and give value to the audience. In this case, the ad is entertaining and plays right into millennials’ nostalgia.

It takes creative courage to break free from the typical “buy now” or “try this” ads we see plastered all over social media.

So, kudos to the team at TMNT for (i) the creative idea and (ii) bringing it to life effectively.

Remember, creativity is the fuel for all successful campaigns.
