4 Systems Every Social Media Team Should Have

These systems work together to help your brand grow on social media

Your social media is only as powerful as the system behind it.

Without one, you’re brand content is unscalable, random, and will miss the mark.

So, where do you start? I’d argue there are four systems you should build for your social media plan:

  1. Ideation + Content Creation System

  2. Approval + Scheduling System

  3. Distribution System

  4. Reporting + Iteration System

Let’s go deeper on each of these.

1. Ideation + Content Creation System ✍️

Leaving content creation up to waves of creativity and motivation is a losing battle. It creates random, out-of-plan content that’s not scalable. Instead, you should have a system in place that your creative team can work within to develop a steady flow of ideas.

I recommend you start with identifying the themes you want your brand to speak about, then create an idea matrix with topics you can drill down repeatedly in different formats.

For example, in this post, I am using my internal theme of Social Media Team Empowerment, the topic of Social Media Systems, and using a Listicle format.

2. Approval + Scheduling System ✅

You should have a system in place that clearly defines the role of each stakeholder in the content approval process. For instance, an SMM creates the first draft of a post, then a Strategist approves it, Legal reviews it, and finally, the SMM revises or schedules the content.

This simple system lets people know where they must act in each step of the process.

3. Distribution System 📣

As my friend Ross Simmonds says, “Create once, distribute forever.” You should have a plan to take a piece of content and push it on different platforms.

That could be using owned channels like your site and email list or external platforms such as social media. The point is to have a system of promotion for your content.

4. Reporting + Iteration System 📈

What KPIs and insights matter from your social content?

Once you’ve outlined what KPIs you will be tracking, set up a system to review performance against your different themes and content types (back at #1 in this list) to see which types of content resonate with your audience. This information gives you insights and helps you iterate on your next batch of social content.

I hope this helps you on your way to creating better social media!

Until next week,

Jordan
